Context-based education for 2075: an exhibition
ExhibitionJos van den Broek Emeritus
An interactive exhibition calling for context-based education for the heart (feeling), head (imagining) and hands (creating). The reason: today’s primary education is often detached from context. The cause: an overly rigid focus on ‘the curriculum’ and standardised testing. This can change. This must change.
Why this exhibition?
In a world where education is often detached from context, I want young people to experience wonder, discover beauty and feel. Not by overwhelming them with facts, but by helping them see connections. The education of 2075 I dream of and work towards every day is context-based learning for the heart (‘feeling’), head (‘imagining’) and hands (‘creating’). This vision is brought to life through an interactive exhibition on this approach to teaching.
The social values I embrace in this work are imagination, beauty, and wonder, as well as the equal recognition of those who work with their hearts, heads and hands.
Wonder sparks intrinsic interest. I witness this daily. For me, inspiring wonder is the university’s most important task. Without wonder in future generations, the university ceases to exist.
Through this exhibition, I aim to explore the core values of 21st-century education and to illustrate how each value can be woven into everyday teaching practice. I also plan to offer hands-on workshops for teaching staff in Leiden.
